I play piano, and have been experimenting with audiovisual projects using Unity. There is a lot of potential at the intersection between generative art and jazz, and this project is a mini-exploration into that realm.
I’ve been learning jazz theory/performance off and on for the past couple of years. As a pianist, Bill Evans is a huge inspiration of mine. I learned some of his signature lines from his version of Autumn Leaves and threw it together with particle systems in Unity. I used MidiJack as an interface between my keyboard and the program. I feel inhibited by my inexperience with Unity, but I expect that to fade over the next few months.
This project doesn’t have a message or idea that it’s trying to communicate. In fact, I’m not terribly impressed by the outcome. This project (and the next one, and the one after that…) are trials and adventures that I hope to evolve into full-fledged ideas and aesthetic.
